Expect to have more in depth answers to some of the questions posed in the MK 'LeaVelet' in here soon.
The table below is from the original template left there to remind me of some some useful ideas/additions if I have time before June 23rd - very unlikely!
Some anticipated questions you may have.
HOW MUCH WILL THE UK SAVE FROM LEAVING?
The UK will save £55 million gross every day, (£35 net after the 'rebate' and Public Sector Receipts (for such things as Farmer's subsidies, development projects dicated by Brussels are deducted from the Gross) , not to mention the added costs of the red tape and bureaucracy through being a member of the EU.
IS THE EUROPEAN UNION A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD?
No and it never has been. There are those countries, like the former Soviet bloc members and southern European countries, which benefit more than the better off countries. Germany contributes most and the UK is close behind in second place.
WILL COMPANIES RELOCATE?
The UK is attractive to businesses as we have a low rate of Corporation Tax. The EU is now seeking to impose a standard rate of Corporation Tax across all member states. This will make inward investment to the UK less attractive. Representatives of many large international companies including Toyota are on record as saying that they have no intention of moving manufacturing from the UK if we leave the EU.
HEALTH TREATMENT IS DIFFERENT THROUGHOUT THE EU. ARE WE ENTITLED TO IT IN OTHER COUNTRIES?
Entitlement varies according to which countries have a reciprocal arrangement with the UK both in the EU and across the globe. When it comes to entitlements for EU migrants, here are some examples of what a 30-year-old single EU migrant with a child but no job can access.
UNITED KINGDOM: Available immediately and free of charge under the National Health Service.
AUSTRIA: Available immediately, but only if you pay “social insurance”.
FRANCE: Only available with a card proving entitlement, issued to residents.
WHY SHOULD IMMIGRANTS LEARN ENGLISH? MANY BRITS DO NOT SPEAK THE LOCAL LANGUAGE IN SPAIN OR FRANCE
This is a Conservative Government initiative, it has nothing to do with whether we stay in or leave the EU.
WHERE WILL WE GET OUR DOCTORS AND NURSES FROM IF WE LEAVE THE EUROPEAN UNION?
Doctors and nurses already in the UK come from countries outside the EU.
As long ago as 1998, nurses were being recruited from overseas.
WILL WE LOSE JOBS IF WE PULL OUT?
Our jobs depend on trade with the EU, not being a member of the EU. Big difference!
In 2014, German car exports to the UK were worth nearly €18billion.
In 2015, the UK bought far more from EU countries than they bought from us, with the gap at an all-time high of £8.1billion.
WHERE WILL WE EXPORT TO?
Once free of the restrictions placed upon us by being a member of the EU, we will be free to export to countries around the globe, including the Commonwealth.
THE EU HAS KEPT THE PEACE IN EUROPE FOR OVER 40 YEARS. WHY SHOULD WE PUT THIS IN JEOPARDY?
NATO, not the EU, has kept the peace in Europe for over 40 years.
WHY DO WE NEED TO CONTROL IMMIGRATION?
The free movement of labour within the European Union has driven down wages in the United Kingdom. By controlling immigration, companies will be prevented from implementing lower wages and Zero Hours contracts. Controlling immigration will also reduce pressure on our public services brought about by an increase in our population.
WHAT ABOUT GENUINE ASYLUM SEEKERS?
We will honour our commitment to genuine asylum seekers under the terms set out in the Geneva Convention.
HOW CAN WE CONTROL OUR BORDERS?
By introducing a points-based system once we leave the EU to ensure we only allow those with the necessary skills to enter the UK. The Australians have been running a similar system for years which has proved successful.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ECONOMIC MIGRANTS AND ASYLUM SEEKERS?
Yes. Economic migrants come seeking a better life and are not from countries in conflict. Asylum seekers flee persecution in their home countries and are entitled to claim asylum in the first safe country on which they set foot.
CAN’T OUR SERVICES TAKE MORE PEOPLE – AFTER ALL, WE ARE A RICH COUNTRY?
We are not a rich country. We owe over £1.6trillion and we are still borrowing to stay afloat. Some facts:
Our payments to the EU are borrowed. Yes, we borrow money at interest to give away!
We have a shortage of teachers.
GPs surgeries are closing their lists and stopping care home visits.
The NHS is at breaking point.
There are pressures on social housing with increased waiting lists.
Demand pressures are causing rents in the private sector housing market to spiral.
The ageing population is causing a crisis in the care sector.
Children’s services are overstretched with more children than ever being in care.
SURELY WE CAN AFFORD TO SPEND MORE ON SOCIAL SECURITY?
If that were the case, the present Government would not be working to reduce the welfare budget that obviously impacts on the most vulnerable.
HOW MIGHT EX-PATS AND PEOPLE WHO OWN PROPERTY IN EU COUNTRIES BE AFFECTED?
The Vienna Convention of 1969 says that the termination of a treaty "does not affect any right, obligation or legal situation of the parties created through the execution of the treaty prior to its termination.” The House of Commons Library says that "withdrawing from a treaty releases the parties from any future obligations to each other, but does not affect any rights or obligations acquired under it before withdrawal." In other words, Brits who have already exercised their right to live in EU states would keep that right after Brexit.
IF WE COME OUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE IMMIGRANTS ALREADY IN THE UK?
They will be able to apply to become a UK citizen after being in the country for five years.
